It is rare that defenses come for any reason other than weakness of the horse or the ignorance of the horseman. To avoid them, the first principle is to demand nothing from the horse who isn't strong enough, never to ask anything complicated, and slowly and progressively explain to him what he must do; without these precautions, even supposing that he did not defend himself, the fact remains that you would quickly ruin his sensitivity.
